Chapter 9

After a wonderful meal and a couple of drinks, all four friends are feeling much better about the day. Glen and Sher are snuggled up together on the love seat and Rick is sitting next to Lynn on the sofa.

Glen can’t get his mind off of the recent problems plaguing Lynn. He remembers that he wants to speak to the detective in Colorado Springs. “Sweetheart, do you remember the detective’s name you spoke with today?”

“No, but he gave Lynn his business card,” Sher answers.

Lynn checks her pockets and finds the card in one of the back pockets of her jeans. She gives the card to Rick, who offers to make the call. After a very short conversation, Rick tells Glen, “Not much to go on. Apparently no one saw anything but two guys getting into a truck. He’s not sure if it’s related to the break-in. I think it’s a good idea that I stay here again tonight. Will that be a problem, Sher?”

“No, of course not…you are always welcome. I just wish it was due to pleasure, and not because we might need protection,” Sher answers Rick.

“I feel terrible bringing trouble to you, Sher. You’ve been through enough already,” Lynn says sadly.

“I won’t hear that kind of talk. You’re in this mess because you purchased a beautiful veil for me. You don’t deserve this anymore than the rest of us but we stick together. So don’t worry. I promise we will all get through this,” Sher tells her friend.

Rick hugs Lynn close and tells her, “We will get to the bottom of this just like we did with Sher’s problems. We are not going to let you down.”

Glen agrees by nodding his head.

Sher gets up saying, “Does anyone want coffee, besides me?”

All of them decide it is a great idea and they all get up to gather in the kitchen.

Out of nowhere, they hear shattered glass and the sounds of gun shots.

“Everyone get down!” Rick yells.

Glen and Rick are already pulling their guns out of their shoulder holsters. They didn’t bother removing them when they came in the front door earlier.

Lynn screams as Rick pushes her to the floor and covers her with his body. As he looks up to see where Sher and Glen are, something else comes flying through the window and smoke starts filling up the room.

“It’s a smoke bomb! Everyone crawl towards the back of the house. Stay on the floor, but move fast. Get to Sher’s bedroom and close the door! Whoever’s outside is trying to smoke us out,” Glen yells.

Rick pulls his phone out and dials nine-one-one and tells the operator the situation and that two officers are in trouble. That will get help fast. He then follows Lynn towards the hallway to the bedrooms.

Rick can’t see Glen or Sher and hopes they are already down the hall. He can hear loud cracking sounds. It sounds like someone is trying to break the door down.

Before he can get any further someone hits him over the head and he hears Lynn scream next to him.
